Giroud Plus £35M’ Move To Land This Man Makes Sense

Edinson Cavani

Arsene Wenger is preparing to launch a player-plus-cash move to land Edinson Cavani from PSG.

According to the Independent, Wenger is growing frustrated of Olivier Giroud’s inconsistency and is
planning to offer the French forward plus £35 million upfront in order to secure the services of Cavani.

We have been tracking the Uruguayan for some time now and have again been linked with a move for him this summer as we look to strengthen our striking options.

The PSG striker is said to be unsettled at the Parc des Princes, but the Ligue 1 club are only willing to sell if the player’s £51 million buyout clause is met.

Due to a rib injury suffered by Zlatan Ibrahimovic last weekend however has Laurent Blanc pondering whether to sell Cavani at all. But the PSG boss may consider doing business with Wenger if Giroud was part of a potential offer.

As for Giroud, well he hasn’t exactly settled as well as many had hoped and his future looks in doubt at the Emirates due to his inconsistent performances.

Giroud’s off-field antics last season didn’t do him any favours with Wenger either, with previous reports suggesting his wife was looking to persuade the ex-Montpellier to return to France in March.

We have already forked out over £60 million for new recruits this summer, with Alexis Sanchez being the marquee signing thus far, but Wenger is shrewd when it comes to buying and a £51 million move for Cavani would be paying over the odds and a lot of cash to part with.

But Giroud plus £35 million could just tempt PSG to sell, while the French club would get a proven striker in the Ligue 1, Arsenal would be getting a forward known for goals, goals, goals.

Cavani scored 25 goals in his debut season for PSG since his move from Napoli, where he found the net 104 times in three seasons at the Serie A club.

This would be a great deal to undertake and hopefully it comes to fruition.

If we manage to sign Cavani for just £35 million then that would be seen as a bargain but pundits and fans alike.

Giroud is struggling and although he had a decent season for us last term, getting rid of him in order to see Cavani in the red and white of Arsenal would be worth it.

A sensible and thought out reported proposal. I hope to see it come to pass.

Milan Looking To Take Rabiot On A Two-year Loan

ADRIEN RABIOT is a target for Milan’s midfield but they must have him renew his contract first with Ligue 1 champs Paris Saint-Germain.

The transfer market ends in about two weeks and those days will be very interesting for the fans of the

Rossoneri as Milan are on the market to sign a striker (to replace Mario Balotelli), a right winger (Alessio Cerci) and a midfielder.

Milan Channel confirmed today that yesterday Milan made some contacts regarding a midfielder and it’s

believed that Paris Saint-Germain’s Adrien Rabiot is a real target of the Diavolo, along with Napoli’s Blerim

Dzemaili, Lyon’s Clement Grenier & Shakhtar’s Fernando.

Ribery Not Ready For Bayern Return - Guardiola

Franck Ribery
Franck Ribery remains at least two weeks away from a return to competitive action with Bayern Munich, according to Pep Guardiola.

Frenchman Ribery, who recently announced his retirement from international football, missed the World
Cup due to a back injury and has been troubled with knee problems in recent weeks.

Ribery played in Bayern's pre-season friendly against Guadalajara in New York at the start of the month, but coach Guardiola has ruled the former Marseille man out of Friday's Bundesliga opener at home to Wolfsburg - although fellow winger Arjen Robben could feature.

"Franck will be out for two or three weeks through injury," said the Spaniard on Thursday. "He still needs time.

"Arjen is fit but hasn't played yet. I'll have to see who is in the best shape. Then I'll decide who plays."

Guardiola is looking forward to his second season in charge at the Allianz Arena and hopes to see a slicker version of Bayern this year as they look to win a third straight German title.

"The Bundesliga is our main objective, it's the most valuable title," he added. "We'll work for it every day.

"I want my side to play better and quicker this season.

"Wolfsburg have some outstanding players, they're very well organised. It will be a good test."

Ribery is not the only player unavailable for Guardiola on Friday, with Rafinha (ankle), Javi Martinez, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Thiago Alcantara (all knee) also sidelined.

Agent Says: Destro likes Chelsea

Mattia Destro’s agent has revealed that his client would be interested in a move to Chelsea.

The Roma striker had been rumoured to be part of a swap deal that would see Fernando Torres move to the Italian capital.

And although that seems unlikely, the youngster’s representative has admitted that the Italy international would be keen on joining the Premier League outfit.

“Destro likes Chelsea,” Renzo Contratto has told reporters.

“Chelsea are interested, that is true, but the rumours of a swap with Torres are not.

“However, Roma do not want to sell Mattia, and Mattia would be more than happy staying in Rome.”

Marco Reus Held Talks With Arsene Wenger Over Arsenal Transfer

Marco Reus could be on the move.
Marco Reus could be on the move
Arsenal are ready to revive their interest in Manchester United target Marco Reus after Arsene Wenger held positive talks with the Borussia Dortmund star in London.

The London Metro cites a report in Spanish newspaper Vozpopuli, which claims the Gunners boss had a secret meeting with the Germany international earlier this summer to discuss the prospect of a transfer to north London.

It's been widely reported that the 25-year-old midfielder turned down the offer of a new contract at the Westfalenstadion, fuelling rumours of a possible exit before the close of the transfer window.

Uncertain future

Jurgen Klopp will be determined to keep Reus for the 2014/15 campaign, but as the Daily Star reports the fact the player's £27.9 million buyout clause comes into play at the end of the season, Dortmund might struggle to turn down a big money offer from one of his suitors this summer.

Arsenal were encouraged by negotiations with the player and his agent in the English capital, but opted to put the transfer on hold after Reus suffered an untimely injury that ruled him out of the World Cup in Brazil.

Now back in full training, the Gunners are planning to make a renewed push for his signature, and hope to lure him to the Emirates Stadium before September 1.

Man United interest

Louis van Gaal has also been credited with an interest in bringing Reus to Old Trafford, but the Red Devils are trailing their Premier League rivals in the race to land him.

Interest in Reus isn't exclusive to England, with reigning La Liga champions Atletico Madrid and Barcelona also mooted as admirers of the Dortmund vice-captain.

Reus has netted an impressive 42 goals in 90 appearances for Dortmund since joining from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2012, and is widely considered one of the best players in the Bundesliga.

It's questionable whether Arsenal need another winger particularly after paying big money to bring Chilean star Alexis Sanchez to the Emirates Stadium, but Wenger is unlikely to allow a player of Reus's quality to join Manchester United.

Lazio Announce Gentiletti Signing

Santiago Gentiletti
Lazio have announced the signing of defender Santiago Gentiletti from Argentine side San Lorenzo.

The Biancocelesti have been busy throughout this summer’s transfer window but were known to be looking

for more defensive reinforcement, something they have now done.

“He is a complete player,” President Claudio Lotito said of the 29-year-old. “We are talking about an

important result for Lazio.

“From next season, Lazio will be able to count on the contribution of the best defender in the South

American Champions League.”

Vieri Congratulates Galliani

Adriano Galliani
Christian Vieri has congratulated Milan CEO

Adriano Galliani for seemingly managing to sell

Mario Balotelli to Liverpool.

The deal, which should see the Italy forward join

the Reds for around £16m, has divided opinion around the peninsula.

However, former Azzurri hitman Vieri made his feelings clear on social media this afternoon, saying that the

Rossoneri are well shot of Balotelli.

“Today Galliani has played the biggest masterstroke in the history of Milan,” he wrote.

Milan Targeting €25m Martinez?

Jackson Martinez
It is reported that Jackson Martinez has emerged as Milan’s number one target to replace Mario Balotelli.

The controversial Italy forward has left San Siro and appears set to join Premier League side Liverpool,

leaving the Rossoneri short of attacking options.

Now, transfer market specialist Gianluca Di Marzio is reporting that talks between the Diavolo and the

Colombian’s representatives are ongoing.

The player has only recently signed a new contract at current club Porto but it is thought he would be keen

on a move to Serie A.

Should he make this clear to his current employers, it is said they would consider lowering their asking price

for the player to a fee in the region of €25m plus bonuses.

Liverpool and Manchester United Eyeing Barcelona Midfielder

It’s back to business in the Premier League, with the transfer window still having a few weeks left to run

before its closure on September 1.

All the top teams vying for places in the top four have been making their additions, and it seems that an old

face could be returning to English football.

Barcelona’s Alex Song has been linked with a move back to the Premier League after spells Arsenal

and Charlton on loan, where he appeared more than 150 times in the top tier.

Liverpool and Manchester United are all said to be looking at bringing in the Cameroon international, with

Barcelona sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta announcing they are happy to let him leave on loan this summer.

Vargas Joins QPR

Edu Vargas
QPR have confirmed that Napoli’s Edu Vargas has joined them on a season-long loan deal.

The Premier League club have been heavily linked with the player over the last week or so and have now

landed their man, with the added option to sign the player permanently next summer.

The Chile international moved to the Partenopei in 2012 but failed to force his way into either Walter

Mazzarri or Rafa Benitez’s first team plans.

Now, he will head out for what is his third loan spell since moving to San Paolo.

“Welcome to Loftus Road, Edu Vargas,” the club announced via their official Twitter account, displaying an

image of the player in a QPR shirt alongside the message.

Benteke Edging Closer To Villa Return

Benteke's recovery is progressing well
Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke could be back in action 'in the next few weeks', manager Paul Lambert has revealed.

The frontman suffered an Achilles injury in April, putting an early stop to his involvement with Villa last season and ruling him out of the World Cup.

However, he is known to have made excellent progress in recent months, and Lambert today revealed that he is edging closer to a first team return.

He said: "Hopefully, all being right, with a bit of luck if Christian doesn't have any major hiccups he will be back soon. I can't put a 100 per cent time limit on it but he is doing really well. To get him back training is important, first and foremost.

"At the minute the guy is doing great. He is looking in great shape, the medical people deserve a lot of credit for getting him in shape."

Lambert also delivered a positive report on Benteke's fellow striker Libor Kozak, who has also been making steady progress following his long-term injury.

The Scot added: "Touch wood everything is OK with their rehab and in the next few weeks they will be back."

Juventus In Talks With Midfielder Paul Pogba Over A New Contract

Paul Pogba: In talks with Juventus over a new contract
Juventus general director Giuseppe Marotta has confirmed that the club are in contract talks with midfielder Paul Pogba.

Pogba has a further two years remaining on his current deal with the Serie A champions, but his future has been the subject of much speculation in recent transfer windows.

Both PSG and Chelsea have been among the clubs linked with a move for the 21-year-old, while Arsenal and former club Manchester United have also been reported to be admirers.

However, Marotta is now hopeful of tying up a new deal for Pogba, who has quickly established himself as one of the game’s brightest prospects since joining from from Old Trafford in 2012.

He said: "With Pogba and his agent we started a negotiation and I am optimistic that there may be an agreement soon."

Marotta also says Juventus have tabled an offer for veteran goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, 36, to extend his stay, while defender Giorgio Chiellini is close to a new deal.

"The Buffon contract is ready. It is up to him to decide when to come and sign and decide when to stop playing football," he said.

"Chiellini’s contract is in the home stretch."

West Brom Boss Alan Irvine Confirms Interest In Georgios Samaras

Georgios Samaras: Greek free agent in demand across Europe
West Bromwich Albion boss Alan Irvine has confirmed his interest in former Celtic striker Georgios Samaras.

The Greece international is a free agent after leaving Celtic Park in the summer and is expected to hold talks with the Baggies.

Irvine said: "He's a player we're aware of. We have enquired about him. Nothing is done as far as he's concerned.

“We have some lists that have been extremely long at times and then they have got shorter and then got longer again.”
Malaga, Sevilla, and Lokomotiv Moscow have also all been linked with a move for Samaras and Irvine admitted he knows that the player has a number of options.

“There is no doubt they are easier if they are free agents because you are at least in the position where you are taking another club out of the equation,” he said.

"You are not waiting for them saying whether they will sell the player or not, but of course free agents have a lot of options and you can find it is tough to complete the deal.”

Samaras scored 73 goals in 249 games for Celtic after arriving from Manchester City, initially on loan, in 2008. He was part of Greece's World Cup squad this summer as they confounded the odds to reach the last 16, where they lost out to Costa Rica.

Angel Di Maria And Sami Khedira Reject Real Madrid Deals

Angel Di Maria: Linked with a move to Manchester United
Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has said that Angel Di Maria has asked to leave the club and Sami Khedira has rejected a new contract.

Di Maria, who has been heavily linked with a move to both Manchester United and Paris St Germain, has rejected the offer of a new contract with the current European champions.

Khedira, who has also turned down new terms at the Bernabeu, has been a reported target for Arsenal this summer and Arsene Wenger admitted on Thursday that he was still hoping to strengthen his squad before the transfer window closes.

Ancelotti said. "Di Maria asked to go in the summer and has rejected an offer from the club, The player has to look for a solution.

"If when the transfer market closes he's still here, he will work with us like last season and there will be no problem.”

PSG manager Laurent Blanc admitted that UEFA fair play rules could scupper any further interest from his club.

"With large players like Di Maria, there are a lot of clubs behind him certainly," Blanc told L'Equipe.

"PSG can not do what he wants in terms of recruitment (because of financial fair play). This is a difficult issue, the president has confirmed to me."

Ancelotti said of Khedira: "It's a different situation to Di Maria. He's not asked to go. He's rejected an offer to renew, but has a year of contract. We'll see what happens."

Madrid signed two more attacking midfielders in James Rodriguez and Toni Kroos this summer to increase the pressure for places in their star-studded squad.

Di Maria came off the bench in the Super Cup first leg against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night, but Khedira did not feature.

Liverpool Agree £16m Fee To Sign Mario Balotelli From Milan

Mario Balotelli: Liverpool target Milan striker
Liverpool have agreed a £16m fee with Milan for striker Mario Balotelli.

Sky sources learned on Thursday that Liverpool had approached Milan about the former Manchester City striker's availability just weeks after Brendan Rodgers denied making a move, and it appears things are
moving along quickly.

Milan confirmed the 24-year-old's departure and Balotelli, who said goodbye to his San Siro team-mates
and backroom staff, said: "Today is my last day at Milan. I am going to Liverpool."

Rodgers has made no secret of his wish to bring in a new forward following Luis Suarez's summer departure, but any chance of Balotelli coming appeared dead in the water earlier this summer.

Speaking on Liverpool's tour of the United States, Rodgers said: "I can categorically tell you Mario Balotelli will not be at Liverpool."

Rodgers was instead targeting Monaco's Radamel Falcao, but the Colombia striker's preference is a move to Real Madrid.

Balotelli's three seasons at City were blighted by trouble, on and off the field, although he did manage 30 goals for the club in all competitions.

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has questioned whether Balotelli would be an automatic starter at Anfield.

"They definitely need a striker, there's no doubt about that," he told Sky Sports.

"At the moment they only have Daniel Sturridge and Rickie Lambert - it looks like Fabio Borini is going to move on - and you need strikers.

"Would he be the final piece of the jigsaw? Would he make the starting XI if everyone was fit and firing? Who knows?

"At the moment Daniel Sturridge has got 36 goals in 50 games for Liverpool and at this moment he is the main man up front.

"Would Brendan then accommodate another striker, whoever that may be, like he did with Luis Suarez?

"He has lots of options now, Brendan Rodgers, and I don't think he will play the same team too often so they do need those options."

Alan Pardew Insists Cheick Tiote Still A Key Asset At Newcastle

Cheick Tiote: Still a key man for Newcastle
Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew has insisted midfielder Cheick Tiote remains a key part of his plans despite speculation linking him with a move to Russia.

The 28-year-old Ivory Coast international is understood to have been the subject of a bid from Lokomotiv Moscow but Pardew said it would take big money to prize Tiote away from the club.

Pardew said: "He's just a great player, he's just a top player. There were a couple of bids but they were nowhere near the valuation we have of the player.

"He's just a great player, he's just a top player. There were a couple of bids but they were nowhere near the valuation we have of the player."

"Top players demand top fees if they are going to move, but at the moment, that isn't the case. He is our player and we are looking forward to fitting him into the team.

"He is very much under contract with us and I love the way he plays, I love his mentality to the game and I look forward to seeing him this week, hopefully."

Tiote's hamstring injury means he will miss the trip to Aston Villa this weekend, but fellow midfielder Siem de Jong and loan striker Facundo Ferreyra are likely to be in the squad.

Pardew added: "Siem has to earn the right to play. Whether he is ready 100 per cent for this weekend, I am not sure. We will decide that, probably, on Friday."

Pakistan Army Pushes For Talks Amid Protests

The government doubled the contingent of soldiers guarding sensitive buildings in the red zone to 700

Intervention by army comes amid mass protests by top cricketer-turned-politician and a cleric urging PM Sharif to quit.

Pakistan's powerful military has called for talks to resolve a week-long political drama as tens of thousands of protesters marched on parliament in a bid to depose the prime minister.

Men, women and children of all ages staged a sit-in outside the parliament building after defying a government ban on entering Islamabad's "red zone", which houses key buildings in the capital, including the official residences of the prime minister and the president and foreign embassies, the AFP news agency reported.

Meanwhile, Tahir ul-Qadri told his protesting supporters camped outside parliament on Wednesday not to allow anyone in or out of the assembly, which is in session with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in attendance.
"Don't let all those inside come out and don't let anyone go in," the cleric told his supporters outside parliament in the capital, Islamabad.

Despite the mounting pressure, Sharif's party said he would not quit, while the army called for a negotiated settlement.

The twin protests led by a famous cricketer-turned-politician and a popular cleric have brought people into the streets, raising fears of unrest in the nuclear-armed US ally with a history of military coups and dictatorship.

"Situation requires patience, wisdom and sagacity from all stakeholders to resolve prevailing impasse," army spokesman General Asim Saleem Bajwa said on Twitter.

He said the government buildings in the so-called red zone were a "symbol of state" and were being protected by the army.

Imran Khan, chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI), and Qadri have led days of protests demanding the resignation of Sharif.

They say last year's general election was rigged, and have piled pressure on the government, starting with two-day "long marches" from the eastern city of Lahore to Islamabad, where they have held five days of rallies.

The government had banned them from the red zone, but Khan and Qadri defied the call, and soon after midnight on Wednesday thousands of their supporters entered the high-security area, using cranes to remove shipping containers put in place to seal off the area.

Peaceful protests

Khan has called on demonstrators not to enter Parliament but warned he would lead his supporters into the premier's office if Sharif does not step down by Wednesday evening.

"Nawaz Sharif, I will wait for your resignation until tomorrow evening and after that, we will enter inside the prime minister's house," Khan said, calling on his supporters to gather at 4pm [11.00 GMT] on Wednesday.

Qadri, however, distanced himself from Khan's call, saying his supporters would maintain a peaceful sit-in until Sharif resigned.

"We will stay here until the sun of revolution rises and a national government is formed," Qadri said after reaching the parliament building early Wednesday.

"Do not enter inside the president and prime minister's houses or the prime minister's secretariat."

Al Jazeera's Kamal Hyder, reporting from the capital, said that there is a lot of tension in Islamabad and some sort of conclusion in the next 48 hours may occur.

"The last thing anybody wants to see is a direct military intervention. However, it appears that within the next 48 hours there will be some sort of conclusion. Even though between now and then there will be high anxiety and of course apprehensions as to what is going to unfold in Islamabad," he said.

On Tuesday, the government doubled the contingent of soldiers guarding sensitive buildings in the red zone to 700.

Despite fears of violence, there were no major clashes as the protesters entered the red zone on Wednesday, with security forces standing off and the government pledging restraint.

Liberia Declares Curfew In Ebola Battle

Liberia recorded the most new deaths between August 14-16

Government calls 9pm-6am curfew and says it is considering even tougher restrictions on movements as deaths mount.

Liberia's government has imposed a nationwide night curfew in an effort to prevent the spread of the deadly Ebola virus, state radio said.

Lewis Brown, Liberia's information minister, told the Reuters news agency that the authorities were considering even tougher restrictions on movements in addition to a 9pm-6am curfew.

The epidemic of the hemorrhagic disease has killed nearly 1,300 people in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea and has also affected Nigeria. Between August 14-16, Liberia recorded the most new deaths, 53, followed by Sierra Leone with 17, and Guinea with 14.

The World Health Organisation said it was working with the UN's World Food Programme to ensure food delivery to one million people living in Ebola quarantine zones cordoned off by local security forces in a border zone of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

"Providing regular food supplies is a potent means of limiting unnecessary movement," it said in a statement.

Besides infection in border zones, Liberia is fighting to stop the spread of the virus in the poorest neighbourhoods of its capital, such as the West Point slum where at the weekend a rock-throwing crowd attacked and looted a temporary holding centre for suspected Ebola cases, 17 of whom fled.

"We are glad to confirm that all of the 17 individuals have been accounted for and have now been transferred to JFK Ebola specialist treatment centre," Brown said.

He also said that after meetings with religious and community leaders, a task force was being set up to go door to door through West Point, a labyrinth of muddy alleys, to explain the risks of the disease and the need to isolate infected patients.

Middle East Islamic State 'has 50,000 fighters in Syria'

The new recruits to IS reportedly included fighters from Chechnya, Europe and Arab countries

Monitoring group says the Islamic State group recruited 6,000 members in last month alone, including 1,000 foreigners.

The Islamic State group has an army of more than 50,000 fighters in Syria, and recruited 6,000 people in the last month, a monitoring group has said.

Rami Abdel Rahman, the director of the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said on Tuesday that the group's recruitment push was gathering pace every month.

"July saw the largest recruitment since the group appeared in Syria in 2013, with more than 6,000 new fighters," he said.

"The number of IS fighters has passed 50,000 in Syria, including 20,000 non-Syrians," he said.

Al Jazeera cannot verify the observatory's figures. However, an Islamic State source backed the statement and told Al Jazeera that the group also had 30,000 fighters in Iraq.

Abdel Rahman said the new recruits in Syria included more than 1,000 foreign fighters from Chechnya, China, Europe and Arab countries. He said most had entered Syria from Turkey.

Other recruits included defectors from the ranks of other armed opposition groups, including 200 from the al-Qaeda affiliate in Syria, the Nusra Front.

The Islamic State group, formerly known as ISIL, grew out of the American-led war in Iraq, and entered the civil war in Syria last year. It attempted to take command of Nusra and denounced al-Qaeda's overall leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri, as "straying from the path".

The Islamic State group initially cooperated with some of the armed opposition in Syria, but its abuses against rival rebels and civilians sparked a backlash that began this January.

It has recently taken over vast areas of neighbouring Iraq and its leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, earlier this year declared himself the caliph of territory captured on both sides of the border.

Martin Skrtel Says Liverpool mMust Learn To Defend As A Team

Martin Skrtel: Keen for Liverpool to improve their defensive record
Martin Skrtel has called on Liverpool to improve defensively as a team and says it is not just the back four to blame for the goals they have let in.

Brendan Rodgers' side just missed out on the Premier League title last season despite scoring 101 goals, as they conceded 50 times.

Liverpool again looked vulnerable at the back in Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Southampton, but Skrtel believes it is unfair to say that only the defenders are at fault.

The centre-back said: "Obviously it hurt but it’s not only about the back four, it's about the team and defending as a group.

"Because we conceded 50 goals, some people are blaming the back four, but it isn’t just about the back line, it is about defending as a team and that’s the big thing that we need to improve.

“If we do that we will stop people from talking about the defence.

"If we can do that and also cut out some of the individual mistakes it will make a big difference.”

Skrtel believes it is a matter of striking the right balance between attack and defence and is confident Liverpool will address the problem.

“We are a team that likes to attack and a lot of players like to get forward so that is maybe something that we need to work on because not everyone can go forward, sometimes you have to defend too,” he added.

“We’ll see anyway, we will work on it and try to improve it. As players we are not happy with that record but we know the direction we were going in as a team last season and we will try to improve on that in the new one.”

Rodgers has strengthened his defence already this summer with the capture of Dejan Lovren from Southampton, and Skrtel thinks that can only help Liverpool’s chances.

He explained: “There’s a lot of competition for places but that can only be good for us as players because when you know that someone is waiting to play in your position it pushes you to show the manager how good you are.

"That can only be good for the team and it’s up to the manager who starts.”

Aaron Ramsey Sent-off Late On As Arsenal Held At Besiktas

Aaron Ramsey: Sent-off late in the match

Aaron Ramsey was sent-off late on as Arsenal were held to a 0-0 draw in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League play-off tie with Besiktas.

In what was an open game at the Ataturk Stadium in Istanbul on Tuesday night, the Wales international recieved his first dismissal in club football for two bookable offences, which could leave Arsene Wenger with a selection headache.
Demba Ba: Tussles with Calum Chambers
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain thought he had won it for 10-man Arsenal with a late run and strike at goal, but Besiktas 'keeper Tolga Zengin brilliantly tipped the ball onto the post.

Jack Wilshere: Does his best to force the issueFormer Chelsea hitman Demba Ba was the most threatening for the home side, even hitting the crossbar straight from kick-off at the start of the
    match.

The result should stand Wenger's men in good stead for the second-leg, but a lack of cutting edge will be worrying to fans.

Ba’s incredible effort in the first few seconds caught us all by surprise, and with Wojciech Szczesny beaten, the woodwork came to the Pole’s rescue.

It set the tone for an impressive start for the Turks. Ba brought the best out of Szczesny with a well-timed volley as they pressed for an early strike.

Down the other end, Olivier Giroud could not connect with a low Alexis Sanchez cross, and Santi Cazorla fired wide after working space for the shot well.

Ba then had the best chance of the half, turning Laurent Koscielny inside out, but fired wide with Szczesny beaten.

Straight away, Giroud had another chance in behind, but he elected to try and flick the ball over Zengin, but again he failed to get any purchase on the ball.

After the interval, the pace of the game slowed, and the play became scrappy as the uneven pitch started to frustrate both sides.

Besiktas created another good opening at the start of the second half, as Olcay Sahan cut in from the left only to curl his effort wide of the far post having done all of the hard work.

Giroud again stuck with the theme of not connecting with low crosses, but this time, he really should have got on the end of a drilled pass from the impressive Sanchez.

Ramsey was then given his marching orders for cynically tugging the shirt of former Arsenal trainee Oguzhan Ozyakup. Needless, and could be costly in the long run.

Oxlade-Chamberlain’s late chance came and went, and a winner would have been undeserved on the balance of play, but the slatemate still leaves the Gunners firmly in the driving seat, even if their forwardline looks anything but clinical.

Benfica Sign Goalkeeper Julio Cesar From QPR

Julio Cesar: Made 27 appearances for QPR after joining from Inter
Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar has joined Benfica on a two-year deal after being released by Queens Park Rangers.

The 34-year-old had two years left on the deal he signed at Loftus Road after arriving on a free transfer from Inter Milan in August 2012.

Cesar, who played in all of Brazil's games in their run to the World Cup semi-finals, had not played a game for Rangers since April 2013 and made only 27 starts in total for Harry Redknapp's side.

He spent the latter part of last season on loan at MLS side Toronto, making seven appearances before returning to QPR after the World Cup.

But with former England international Robert Green firmly established as QPR's first-choice, Cesar has left in search of regular first-team football.

Slovenia goalkeeper Jan Oblak ended last season as Benfica's first-choice between the posts but left the club to join Atletico Madrid earlier this summer as a replacement for Thibaut Cortois, who returned to Chelsea after three seasons on loan in the Spanish capital.

Cesar won five Serie A titles and the Champions League with Inter Milan.

Luka Modric Signs New Real Madrid Contract To Stay Until 2018

    Luka Modric: New Real deal
Real Madrid's Croatian playmaker Luka Modric has signed a new four-year contract with the Spanish giants.

The 28-year-old former Dinamo Zagreb and Tottenham man, who started in Tuesday's 1-1 Supercopa first-leg draw against Atletico Madrid, moved to the Spanish capital in 2012 and helped Carlo Ancelotti's side to Champions League and Copa del Rey glory last term.

"Real Madrid CF announces the extension of Luka Modric's contract, linking him to the club for the next four seasons," a short statement from the club read.

Cristiano Ronaldo will undergo tests on Wednesday afternoon after being substituted due to a muscle strain at the Bernabeu on Tuesday night.
    Ronaldo: Injured against Atletico

    Ronaldo: Injured against Atletico
Colombia winger James Rodriguez, who replaced the Portugal forward after the interval, was optimistic his team-mate would be available for Friday's second leg.

"Cristiano felt something during the game," the 23-year-old said on Real's club website. "We hope it's nothing serious."

Rodriguez, the Golden Boot winner at this summer's World Cup, went on to net his first goal for his new club in the 80th minute.

His strike looked to have given Ancelotti's side the upper hand ahead of Friday's game at the Vicente Calderon, but Raul Garcia equalised two minutes from time for the Primera Division champions.

"I'm delighted because this is a dream for me," Rodriguez said after opening his account following his big-money switch from Monaco last month. "I scored a goal and I hope I can score a lot more goals in the future.

"Step by step, and with a lot of training, I'm improving.

"It's a pity (Atletico equalised) because we had the game in our hands."

Despite the late leveller, Rodriguez remained confident Real would finish the job on Friday.

"Now we must go to the Calderon and get a result," he said. "We will have to be patient, find spaces and try to score.

"As a top team, we need to go out and win.

"I hope I can score again against Atletico on Friday and try to help my team win there."

Swansea Complete Deal For Napoli Defender Federico Fernandez

Federico Fernandez in action for Napoli
Swansea City have confirmed the signing Argentina defender Federico Fernandez on a four-year deal from Napoli for an undisclosed fee.

The deal – which is subject to international clearance – was completed after Fernandez, 25, passed a medical on Monday.

Fernandez, who will wear the number 33 shirt, will compete with captain Ashley Williams, Jordi Amat and Kyle Bartley for a place in the heart of the Swansea defence.

He is expected to go straight into the squad for Saturday’s home game against Burnley.

Speaking last week, Swansea boss Garry Monk was full of praise for Fernandez, saying: “He is at a good age for us and will suit Swansea City.

"We want players who add quality to the squad and he will."

Fernandez helped Napoli win the Coppa Italia last season - they also finished third in Serie A - and made four appearances for Argentina at the World Cup in Brazil.

He began his career with Estudiantes before joining Napoli in July 2011 - he has also spent time on loan at Spanish club Getafe.

Manchester United Confirm Marcos Rojo Is Moving From Sporting Lisbon, With Nani Returning On Loan

Marcos Rojo: Confirmed for Manchester United move
Manchester United have confirmed they have reached an agreement with Sporting Lisbon to sign Marcos Rojo, with Nani returning to his former club on a season-long loan.

Argentina international Rojo, 24, had hinted last week that he was poised to move to England and become part of Louis van Gaal's squad before Sporting rubber-stamped his departure on Tuesday.

A United statement read: "Manchester United is delighted to announce it has reached an agreement with Sporting Lisbon to sign defender Marcos Rojo, subject to a medical and agreeing personal terms.

Nani was given a hero's welcome after returning to his former club Sporting Lisbon on a season-long loan.

"A further announcement will be made when the process is complete."

Rojo had returned to training with the Portuguese giants only after apologising to them for previously refusing to play, as he looked to force through a transfer.

In a recent interview, Rojo had said: "It's a dream to play at Manchester United and I am very proud of having the chance of working with [Louis] van Gaal.

Rojo, who can play at left-back or centre-back, claimed he always wanted to play for United, after speaking with former United star Juan Sebastian Veron earlier in his career.

"I spoke with Juan Sebastian Veron about Manchester United when we were at Estudiantes," he said. "I have always liked English football, and I should adapt to this new playing style easily."

Nani rejoins the Portuguese club that he left for Old Trafford in 2007 having scored 25 goals in 147 appearances for United.

United, who lost their opening league game against Swansea on Saturday, have been frustrated in their quest to strengthen a squad that has seen no new recruits since Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera arrived in June.

Thomas Muller Rejected Approach From Manchester United

Thomas Muller: Remains fully committed to Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller has admitted to rejecting a lucrative offer to join Manchester United.

The Germany international, who tasted World Cup glory in Brazil over the summer, is reported to have been identified as a top target by Louis van Gaal after he inherited the managerial reins at Old Trafford.

An approach was made, with United eager to bring world-class talent into their ranks as they seek a reversal in fortune.

Muller admits a move would have been of financial benefit to him, with the money on offer ‘astronomical’.

He has, however, taken a decision he believes will be of greater benefit to his long-term career, with the 24-year-old happy and settled at Bayern.

Muller has spent his entire career to date with the reigning Bundesliga champions and sees no reason why he should turn his back on the club to go chasing a bigger pay packet elsewhere.

He told Bild when asked if United had come close to signing him: “Of course.

“I was aware that I could earn more by making that transfer.

“The amount that foreign clubs were offering me was astronomical. But Bayern are my club, a change was not an issue for me."

Malky Mackay In Pole Position To Be Named Crystal Palace Manager

    Malky Mackay
Crystal Palace are expected to name their new manager today and Malky Mackay is the frontrunner to replace Tony Pulis, according to Sky sources.

Mackay is thought to be the preferred choice of co-chairman Steve Parish, who interviewed him and former Tottenham head coach Tim Sherwood over the weekend.

Glenn Hoddle, the QPR first-team coach, ruled himself out of the running on Monday, and bookmakers have suspended betting on Mackay becoming the next Palace boss.

Previous boss Pulis steered the club to safety last season, but left by mutual consent last Thursday, just two days before the season-opening 2-1 defeat at Arsenal.

If he takes charge at Selhurst Park, Mackay will be reunited with Eagles sporting director Iain Moody, who worked with him at Cardiff.

Mackay was sacked by Cardiff owner Vincent Tan last December, with the team lying in 16th in the Premier League table, and the Bluebirds would later slip to relegation.

ISIS Beheading U.S. Journalist James Foley

    ISIS beheads American reporter

A video released by ISIS shows the beheading of U.S. journalist James Foley and threatens the life of another American if President Barack Obama doesn't end military operations in Iraq.
In the video posted Tuesday on YouTube, Foley is seen kneeling next to a man dressed in black. Foley reads a message, presumably scripted by his captors, that his "real killer'' is America.
"I wish I had more time. I wish I could have the hope for freedom to see my family once again," he can be heard saying in the video.

He is then shown being beheaded.
"We have seen a video that purports to be the murder of U.S. citizen James Foley by (ISIS)," National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said. "The intelligence community is working as quickly as possible to determine its authenticity. If genuine, we are appalled by the brutal murder of an innocent American journalist and we express our deepest condolences to his family and friends. We will provide more information when it is available."
Obama was briefed about the video, and "he will continue to receive regular updates," White House spokesman Eric Schultz said.
ISIS has carried out executions, including beheadings, as part of its effort to establish an Islamic caliphate that stretches from Syria into Iraq. In many cases, ISIS -- which refers to itself as the Islamic State -- has videotaped the executions and posted them online.
CNN is not airing the video.
    What to know about ISIS

    'They are innocents'

Foley disappeared on November 22, 2012, in northwest Syria, near the border with Turkey. He was reportedly forced into a vehicle by gunmen; he was not heard from again. At the time of his disappearance, he was working for the U.S.-based online news outlet GlobalPost.
On Tuesday, Foley's mother, Diane, took to social media with an emotional statement to praise and mourn her son.
"We have never been prouder of our son Jim. He gave his life trying to expose the world to the suffering of the Syrian people," she said in a post on the Free James Foley Facebook page.
"We implore the kidnappers to spare the lives of the remaining hostages. Like Jim, they are innocents. They have no control over American government policy in Iraq, Syria or anywhere in the world.
"We thank Jim for all the joy he gave us. He was an extraordinary son, brother, journalist and person. Please respect our privacy in the days ahead as we mourn and cherish Jim.''

    Another American in video

The video of his killing also shows another U.S. journalist. The militant in the video, who speaks English with what sounds like a British accent, says the other American's life hangs in the balance, depending on what Obama does next.
U.S. Official: ISIS 'credible alternative to al Qaeda'

The journalist is believed to be Steven Sotloff, who was kidnapped at the Syria-Turkey border in 2013. Sotloff is a contributor to Time and Foreign Policy magazines.
The Committee to Protect Journalists estimates there are about 20 journalists missing in Syria, many of them held by ISIS.
Among them is American Austin Tice, a freelance journalist who was contributing articles to The Washington Post. Tice disappeared in Syria in August 2012. There has been no word of from him since his abduction.

    'We ask for your prayers'

As a freelancer, Foley picked up work for a number of major media outlets, including Agence France-Presse and GlobalPost.
"On behalf of John and Diane Foley, and also GlobalPost, we deeply appreciate all of the messages of sympathy and support that have poured in since the news of Jim's possible execution first broke," Philip Balboni, GlobalPost CEO and co-founder, said in a published statement, referring to James Foley's parents.
"We have been informed that the FBI is in the process of evaluating the video posted by the Islamic State to determine if it is authentic. Until we have that determination, we will not be in a position to make any further statement. We ask for your prayers for Jim and his family."
Foley had previously been taken captive in Libya. He was detained there in April 2011 along with three other reporters and released six weeks later.
Afterward, he said that what saddened him most was knowing that he was causing his family to worry.
    Who is the ISIS?

     Fair, curious and popular

Foley grew up in New Hampshire and graduated from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism in 2008.
Like some other young journalists working after the September 11 terror attacks, Foley was drawn to Iraq, Afghanistan and other areas of conflict.
Friends described Foley as fair, curious and impressively even-tempered.
"Everybody, everywhere, takes a liking to Jim as soon as they meet him," journalist Clare Morgana Gillis wrote in a blog post about him in May 2013, six months after he disappeared in Syria.
"Men like him for his good humor and tendency to address everyone as 'bro' or 'homie' or 'dude' after the first handshake. Women like him for his broad smile, broad shoulders, and because, well, women just like him."

    'Our hearts are broken'

People in Foley's hometown of Rochester, New Hampshire, expressed shock and sadness at the news.
"This is a tragedy which is beyond imagining. There are no words to describe this kind of inhumanity," the Rev. Paul Gousse of the Holy Rosary Church told CNN affiliate WMUR.
"You just feel sad," Sully Harte, a neighbor, told the local broadcaster. "You just hope the family can grieve and deal with it because it's one of those things that you can't control at all."
Sen. Kelly Ayotte, Republican of New Hampshire, said in a statement that "our hearts are broken for the Foley family."
"James was an innocent civilian who was bravely performing his job as a journalist," Ayotte said. "This barbaric and heinous act shocks the conscience and highlights the truly evil nature of the terrorists we confront, who must be defeated."
    Will anyone stop ISIS?

    Previous brutal killings of Americans

The video of Foley was released as ISIS is being targeted by American airstrikes ordered by Obama.
"I think they may have been surprised and are doing the best they can to retaliate," former CIA director R. James Woolsey, Jr. told CNN.
Foley's killing recalled the murder of Daniel Pearl, The Wall Street Journal correspondent who was kidnapped while reporting in Pakistan in January 2002. His killing was captured on video and posted on line by al Qaeda.
It also harkened to the videotaped beheadings of Americans Nicholas Berg, Eugene Armstrong and Jack Hensley carried out by al Qaeda during the height of the Iraq War.
