Some of the more sensational reports in England this week claim Manchester United are considering an outlandish £100m world record operation to sign Angel Di Maria
ABC: United in the race, but no offer. Spanish outlet ABC confirm United’s interest in Di Maria is genuine, but they say that as of yet there is nothing official from the Red Devils.
“United have joined the race for the midfielder, but have yet to place a firm offer on the tables of the Bernabeu offices. Van Gaal wants the Argentine in the squad, and United’s loss in their first Premier League game this season could push a move forward.”
ABC expand that Di Maria’s good performances in pre-season have done little to change Madrid's intentions to sell him.
“Di Maria wants to show that he deserves to be a starter. The difference in form between him and some of the new signings is striking, but the club continues to look into how they can profit from the player.”
El Pais: Di Maria doesn’t feel valued
Diego Torres in El Pais has a different opinion on Di Maria however, saying the player is looking for a club that will value him as one of their top players, unlike Madrid. He notes:
“Madrid’s official line is Di Maria wants to leave, he wants them to sell because he’s not happy with his contract and both Monaco and PSG will offer him double what he earns in Spain, but the player’s version of events features other details, confirmed by sources at the Bernabeu. Di Maria thinks Florentino Perez doesn’t appreciate him and will never consider him sufficiently important to pay what other teams will offer.
The Argentine says the president is distant from him, and he will never be an important player for Madrid while the strategy of the club is to use him as back up.”
Torres says Carlo Ancelotti and Florentino Perez don’t see eye to eye on the midfielder.
“Signing James [Rodriguez] is a declaration of intent as Carlo Ancelotti never asked for another playmaker, and instead wanted the club to make the necessary moves to keep Di Maria. That meant increasing his salary. However, either the offer never came or it wasn’t good enough. Moreso when Florentino Perez then opted to sign James in one of the most disproportionate deals in football. Di Maria wants more money and more recognition.”
Carlo Ancelotti: I don’t know Di Maria’s decision
Despite the differing opinions of Spanish columnists, what does seem certain is that Di Maria’s Madrid future is hanging in the balance. Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of Madrid’s Supercopa clash with Atletico, Carlo Ancelotti noted:
“I’m not going to get involved in the Di Maria thing as I don’t want to lose concentration on tomorrow’s game. I don’t know what he has decided, but I know he is training and he’s ready to play tomorrow night.”
El Confidencial: United may have to wait
Spanish website El Confidencial suggests United and any other club that wants to sign Di Maria may have to play the waiting game.
“A deal looked all but done with PSG but Financial Fair Play put an end to the operation. The move is still alive, provided PSG manage to sell someone like Cavani or Lavezzi, who have high salaries.
If that happens, the plan is to then reactivate and wrap up the Di Maria deal. The other club lurking and watching how events unfold is Manchester United. Louis van Gaal wants Di Maria, but will have to wait.”
