The Lazio midfielder could be subject of an £8million bid from the Dutch boss, who wants the Uruguay World Cup star to become the club's eighth signing

Ronald Koeman wants to make Lazio midfielder Alvaro Gonzalez Southampton's eighth summer signing.

Koeman is eying an £8m bid for the 29-year-old Uruguayan international who played in all four of his country's World Cup matches.

Saints boss Koeman has spent £47m since replacing Mauricio Pochettino at St Mary's but is still looking to add to his departure-hit squad before the transfer window shuts.

Koeman said: "We are still looking to sign one or two more players including a winger."

Versatile Gonzalez can also provide cover at right back following Calum Chambers' £16m move to Arsenal.

Midfielder Jack Cork is currently understudy to Nathaniel Clyne but doubts remain about Cork's future.

The former Chelsea trainee is out of contract next summer and is wanted by Crystal Palace, West Brom and Swansea.

Saints are also bracing themselves for a fresh bid from Tottenham for Morgan Schneiderlin despite repeatedly saying the France midfielder is not for sale.
