Captain Vincent Kompany has signed a new five-year deal to remain at the Etihad Stadium, coming off the back of other first team stars David Silva, Samir Nasri and Aleksandar Kolarov all agreeing new deals at the reigning PL champions this summer.
The Belgian defender, who joined City from Hamburg in 2008, has been a leading figure in their rise up the PL standings on their way to clinching the title in 2011-13 and 2013-14. Kompany, 28, has played over 240 times for the Citizens over the past six seasons and his towering performances from central defense quickly made him a fans favorite.
Kompany was delighted to seal a deal that seems him stay at City until 2019 and believes he and the club share the same vision for the future. Speaking to Manchester City’s website, Kompany shared his delight at the new contract.
“When I arrived in 2008, I could never have dreamed that we could achieve what we have over the last six years but, for me, this is just the start of the journey.
“This team is stronger now than it’s ever been; we have competition for places in every position and a dressing room full of exceptional, motivated people who want to continue making history together.
“Lifting two Premier League titles, the FA Cup and the Capital One Cup have been four of the best days of my life but I believe that there are many more of these occasions ahead.”
Belgium’s captain certainly deserves this new deal and has galvanized City’s squad after several new faces have come and gone in the past six years. Kompany’s arrival signaled a new era at City and when you look around at talismanic center backs in PL history — Tony Adams at Arsenal, John Terry at Chelsea, Rio
Ferdinand at Manchester United — Kompany fits that mold. He is a true leader who always seems to come up with big performances when it matters most.
With Kompany, Silva, Nasri and Kolarov all signed to long-term deals, continuity is definitely the key word for City this offseason as they aim to become just the third team in history to win back-to-back PL crowns.
